Union Electric Steel

In order to maintain its position at the forefront of roll making. The Davy Roll Company has invested heavily over the last 10 years. This has created a Company with very modern roll making facilities to compliment the new roll types available.

Melting

The melting section of the foundry comprises of 5 electric induction furnaces with a total capacity of 86 Tonnes. Two of these furnaces which were installed in 1996 are medium frequency and are capable of a melting rate of more than 8 tonnes per hour. The introduction of more sophisticated roll materials has lead to the necessity for much closer control systems, Davy Roll have addressed this with computer monitoring and control on all melting functions.

Casting

We are capable of casting rolls up to 1650mm finished diameter and 55 Tonnes delivered weight. This can be achieved by the traditional static cast method or centrifugal casting (Rocast).

Heat Treatment

The 17 heat treatment furnaces comprise 12 high velocity gas fired furnaces and 5 electric furnaces. The maximum operating temperature is 1200C permitting treatment of the more advanced materials. In addition to this in 1998 we invested in a computerised central control and monitoring system which further enchanced the already tight control of the process.

In addition to the above equipment the heat treatment section also has a Selas differential hardening furnace and Quenching system.

Machine Shop

Recent investment in the machine shop including the purchase of equipment and the ongoing retrofit operations maintain our position at the forefront of machining technology. Our extensive range of machine tools are complimented by a number of CNC finishing lathes and a twin headed CNC milling machine.

Equipment and Control

Control of the process and systems is an important part of the philosophy of The Davy Roll Company. Over recent years modern computerised technology has been introduced throughout the company, this allows us to monitor and control all aspects of manufacture. This ranges from the start of the process with CAD aided design of the mould through to the end of the process with the automatic generation of the Test Certificates.

People

Our employees are our greatest asset

With a high proportion of long serving employees amongst our 320 workers we have a wealth of knowledge in roll manufacturing. Our modern apprenticeship schemes give us a perfect blend of youth and experience for the future. Continuous training at all levels have developed our people to be flexible and able to adapt to the ever-changing requirements of the roll industry.
