This traditional roll quality is basically a grey iron containing a small amount of iron carbide and it is used mainly for short-run section rolling when the higher cost of more wear resistant rolls is uneconomic. Hardness penetration is good so that the rolls can be successfully used for deep groove designs.
The substantial graphite content gives the rolls an excellent tolerance of indifferent cooling conditions and reduces friction in designs where thrust collars are used.
Grain rolls have excellent damping properties which removes the risk of the unpleasant resonance effects that can occur when high thrust collar loads are set up during rolling.
